Who Is God? Understanding the Holiness of God and What It Means for Your Life

Holiness is one of those words that can make people uncomfortable. It can feel like a list of rules, a standard impossible to meet, or a reason to feel guilty. But what if holiness is actually about freedom? And what if understanding the holiness of God is the very thing that changes how you live?

Why Holiness Is Not About Following Rules

Before diving into who God is, it helps to clear up a common misunderstanding. Holiness is not a checklist. Rules alone cannot make anyone holy, and they certainly cannot keep the flesh from doing what it wants to do.

Paul makes this clear in Colossians 2:20-23: "Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations? Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle... These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh."

Think about a toddler near a hot stove. You tell them not to touch it. They inch closer anyway. The rule did not stop them. But once they get burned and realize that the parent was trying to protect them out of love, everything changes. They listen not because of the rule, but because they understand the love behind it.

That is exactly how holiness works. When you walk in a loving relationship with God and understand how much He cares for you, you begin to live in a way that is pleasing to Him. His commands are guardrails, not restrictions. They exist because He loves you and wants to protect you.

Jesus summed it up in John 8:31-32: "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

What Does "Holy" Actually Mean?

The word holy means different. It means set apart. There is no God like the God of the Bible. He is in a class entirely by Himself, and that is what makes Him holy.

When you read the Bible, you find that almost anything can become holy when it is separated from the common and devoted to God. Holy ground. Holy days. Holy garments. Holy people. But when you try to apply that definition to God Himself, you run into something far greater. God is not holy because He keeps the rules. He wrote them. His holiness is not determined by anything outside of Himself. He simply is.

What Isaiah's Vision Reveals About God

One of the most vivid pictures of God's holiness in all of Scripture comes from Isaiah chapter 6. Isaiah writes:

"In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one cried to another and said: 'Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!' And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke." - Isaiah 6:1-4

From just these four verses, there is a great deal to understand about who God is.

1. God Is Alive

The vision begins with the death of King Uzziah. Uzziah is gone, but God lives on. Psalm 90:2 says, "From everlasting to everlasting, You are God." Every world leader, every historical figure, every founder of every religion has died. But Jesus rose from the grave, and that tomb is empty. There is no turnover in the Trinity. He always has been and always will be the living God.

2. God Has All Authority

Isaiah saw the Lord sitting on a throne. A throne represents the right to rule. Heaven is not falling apart. God is never at His wit's end. He sits, and all is at peace because He has complete control. Matthew 28:18 records Jesus saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth."

3. God Is All-Powerful

His throne is not just one among many. It is high and lifted up, signifying superior power over every other authority. Isaiah 46:9-10 says, "I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning... My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure." No opposing force can cancel what God has purposed. What He plans, He accomplishes.

4. God Is Magnificent

The train of His robe filled the entire heavenly temple. Imagine a wedding dress whose train does not just trail down the aisle but fills every seat, every hallway, every corner of the building. That is the image Isaiah gives us. God is a God of incomparable magnificence and splendor. And if the world He created is as beautiful as it is, how much more magnificent must the God who thought it all up and spoke it into existence be?

5. God Is Holy

The angels surrounding His throne did not cry out about His power or His wisdom. They cried out about His holiness. Over and over. Holy, holy, holy. Words ultimately fall short when trying to describe the holiness of God. He is utterly and absolutely set apart. There is no one like Him, and there never will be.

6. God Is Glorious

The angels declared that the whole earth is full of His glory. The glory of God is the manifestation of His holiness made visible. It is His holiness gone public. When you experience the glory of God, He has revealed Himself to you in a personal way. And while that can happen in a corporate worship setting, walking in it consistently requires getting alone with Him in the secret place.

What Happens When You Encounter a Holy God

Every person in Scripture who encountered the holiness of God had the same response. They became deeply aware of their own brokenness.

Job said in Job 42:5-6: "I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees You. Therefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes."

Isaiah responded in Isaiah 6:5: "Woe is me, for I am lost! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts."

The holiness of God does not crush you. It reveals your need for a Savior. And that is exactly where the gospel comes in.

Why Jesus Is the Answer to God's Holiness

Isaiah 53 paints a picture of the One who would come to bridge the gap between a holy God and broken people. He was pierced for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities. The chastisement that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.

"All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all." - Isaiah 53:6

The greatest motivator for living a holy life is not fear of punishment. It is love. First John 4:8 says, "God is love." And the cross is the greatest display of love in all of human history. He did it for you. One drop of that blood is enough to wash away every sin and make you clean.

How Moses Reflects What Spending Time with God Does to a Person

When Moses spent time in the presence of God, something visible happened. His face began to shine so brightly that the people were afraid to come near him. He had to wear a veil.

Exodus 34:29-30 says: "Now it was so, when Moses came down from Mount Sinai... that Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone while he talked with Him. So when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him."

Second Corinthians 3:7-8 takes this further, pointing out that because of Jesus and His finished work on the cross, we now have access to an even more glorious encounter with God than Moses did. The veil has been torn. We can boldly approach the throne of grace.

The question worth sitting with is this: Is there something visibly different about your life? Are you shining in the darkness around you?

Life Application

This week, find a secret place and get alone with God. It does not have to be elaborate. It can be a kitchen chair late at night, a quiet corner in the morning, or a few minutes in your car before you walk into work. The point is to pursue Him personally, not just in a group setting.

The glory of God is revealed in the secret place. And the more time you spend with Him, the more different you will become. That is what holiness looks like in real life. Not a list of rules, but a life transformed by love and time spent with a holy God.

God is holy. He is alive, all-powerful, magnificent, and glorious. And because of Jesus, you have full access to Him. Do not let another week go by without pursuing that.h bold text.
