Many Christians walk through life feeling defeated, stuck in the same struggles, and wondering why victory seems out of reach. But Scripture makes clear that we were never meant to live that way. There is a power available to every believer that changes everything, and it starts with understanding who the Holy Spirit is and what He came to do.

Why Do So Many Christians Feel Defeated?

The answer often comes down to two missing ingredients. When the Sadducees tried to trap Jesus with a theological question, His response cut straight to the heart of the problem.

"You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God." - Matthew 22:29

Jesus identified two things that lead people astray: not knowing the Scriptures and not knowing the power of God. These two things work together. You cannot have one without the other and expect to walk in lasting victory.

Scriptures give us structure. The Holy Spirit gives us power. We need both.

What Happens When We Try to Overcome in Our Own Strength?

Peter is a perfect example. Before the day of Pentecost, he boldly declared that he would never deny Jesus, even if everyone else did. Yet before sunrise, he denied Him three times. His determination was real, but determination without the Spirit will ultimately fall.

After Pentecost, everything changed. The same Peter stood before thousands without fear and preached the gospel boldly. The difference was not Peter. The difference was what came upon Peter: the Holy Ghost.

"You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you." - Acts 1:8

The Greek word for power here is dunamis, meaning miraculous, explosive, dynamite-level power. That is what God makes available to every believer.

What Does the Holy Spirit Give Us Power to Overcome?

This is not a vague or general kind of power. The Holy Spirit gives specific power over real struggles:

"The very Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead now lives inside of us." - Romans 8:11

If death could not stop Jesus, then no circumstance has ultimate authority over a Spirit-filled believer.

What Does "The Spirit Came Upon" Mean in the Bible?

Throughout the Old Testament, the Spirit came upon people and remarkable things happened:

But here is the shift that changes everything. In the Old Testament, the Spirit came upon people. In the New Testament, the Spirit came in.

"I will ask the Father and He will give you another comforter, a counselor, a helper, an intercessor, an advocate, a strengthener and a standby that He may remain with you forever." - John 14:16

The Holy Spirit is not just visiting. He is dwelling inside every believer. That means He will never leave, because He is in you.

Why Does the Holy Spirit Feel Distant Sometimes?

The Holy Spirit is described as a gentleman. He will not force His way in. He only goes where He is welcomed, received, and invited.

Think of it this way: the Holy Spirit is always reaching toward you, always wanting to be close. But sometimes we pull back. We stop praying. We stop worshiping. We stop asking. And when we do, we cut ourselves off from the very power source we need.

Like a hair dryer that keeps falling out of the outlet, many believers plug in sometimes and experience the power, then unplug and wonder why the power is gone. We have to stay plugged in.

"Walk and live habitually in the Holy Spirit, responsive to and controlled and guided by Him." - Galatians 5:16 (AMP)

Does God Promise to Remove Every Storm?

Not always. Paul prayed three times for a thorn in his flesh to be removed, and God's answer was not removal. It was something better.

"My grace is sufficient for you." - 2 Corinthians 12:9

The word grace in the Greek carries the meaning of strength. God was telling Paul: My strength is sufficient for what you are facing. Sometimes God does not immediately remove the storm. Instead, He strengthens us to walk through it.

Storms reveal where your strength comes from. And for the believer, the answer is always the same: your help comes from the Lord.

How Do You Stay Filled with the Holy Spirit?

"Do not get drunk with wine, but ever be filled and stimulated with the Holy Spirit." - Ephesians 5:18 (AMP)

The Greek tense of that phrase means keep on being filled. It is not a one-time event. Just like a car needs refueling, we need to continually ask the Holy Spirit to fill us again.

What Changes When We Are Filled with the Holy Spirit?

When we are filled and walking in the Spirit, real transformation takes place:

We do not become problem-free. We become Spirit-powered. The storm may still rage around us, but the Spirit of God gives us peace within us. Jesus was asleep in the boat while the storm raged outside. The storm on the outside never got inside of Him. That is the life available to every Spirit-filled believer.

You Are Fighting From Victory, Not For It

Here is the truth that changes everything: you are not fighting for victory. You are fighting from victory. Jesus already bought and paid for your victory at the cross.

"In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loves us." - Romans 8:37

The problem is not a lack of available power. The problem is that we keep trying to push the train from the caboose instead of sitting in the engine and letting the power do what it was designed to do. All we have to do is sit down and say, "Holy Spirit, let's go."

God's power is greater than the devil's power. Every time you face something, remind yourself: the power of God that is in me is greater than the power of the devil that is against me.

Life Application

This week, stop trying to overcome your struggles through willpower alone. Instead, intentionally invite the Holy Spirit into your daily routine. Turn on worship music in the morning. Open your Bible before you open your phone. Pray out loud and ask the Holy Spirit to fill you again today. Do this every single day this week, not just once.

The Holy Spirit is not waiting for you to get everything right. He is waiting for you to open up and let Him in. Let Him be close. Let Him fill you. And then watch what He does.agraph with bold text.
