Better Unity: What Jesus Prayed for You and Why It Changes Everything

My First paragraph with bold teDivision is everywhere. In politics, in homes, in marriages, and even within the church. But this is not a new problem, and it is not without a solution. Jesus Himself prayed for something specific on our behalf, and understanding that prayer might be the most important thing we can do as believers today.
Why Is the World So Divided Right Now?
No matter where you look, something is forcing you to choose a side. Division runs through politics, through families, and even through the church. But this battle is not new. The enemy has been using division as a tactic since the very beginning, starting with Adam and Eve in the garden.
He isolates people. He uses shame to make you feel unworthy. He convinces you that you have lost all value. And when he gets you alone in your thoughts, he goes to work.
Those are lies. He is the Father of lies.
What Did Jesus Actually Pray for Us?
In John 17:20-23, Jesus prayed something remarkable:
"I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me." - John 17:20-23
Jesus prayed that we would exist in a mature, purposeful, whole state of unity so that the world would know He was sent by the Father and that the Father loves us.
There is not one instance in the Bible where Jesus prayed and His prayer went unanswered. This prayer is still being fulfilled.
How Does God's Love for Us Compare to His Love for Jesus?
That passage says the Father has loved us the same way He loved Jesus. Let that sink in. The Creator of all things, the power behind the cosmos, sees you as one of His own children.
When that truth becomes real to you, it changes how you face your problems. Instead of approaching difficulty with "how am I going to get through this," you begin to approach it knowing you have access to unlimited resources from the throne of God.
Point 1: Surrender to Jesus and He Will Make You Whole
The first place unity must begin is inside of you. There is a constant war between your flesh and your Spirit. Paul described it plainly: why do I do the things I wish not to do? That battle is real, and it can feel exhausting.
But here is what changes everything. Every single day, living a lifestyle of surrender. Saying, "Lord, I cannot do this on my own. Let your will be done today instead of mine."
If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, you are righteous. Not because of what you have done, but because of what He did. There are two kinds of righteousness: yours and His. One is perfect, and one is as filthy rags. Through faith in Christ, you stand in His.
We are in a process of drowning out a fleshly voice and developing an eternal one. We are becoming one with Him. This is the purpose of wholeness within us individually.
What Does Division in the Home Look Like?
Your marriage represents something far greater than just two people trying to make it through the week. It is a picture of the relationship between Christ and His church. If God values marriage, we should value it too.
The enemy attacks the home through distraction. Social media shows you everyone's best day. Nobody posts about what they are struggling with. When you compare your life, your spouse, or your family to what you see online, you will always feel like you fall short. That is not where your value comes from.
He also attacks through selfishness. When you get married and have children, your life is no longer about you. It is about them. The greatest pandemic of our day is not a virus. It is the fatherless home.
Fathers, if you want to be good at what you are called to do, it starts with learning how to serve. Their needs are greater than your own.
Point 2: Choose Unity in Your Home Because Future Generations Depend on It
Husbands and wives, the most important decision you can make together is to make your pursuit of Christ the center of everything. As each of you draws closer to Him, you draw closer to each other.
Joshua 24:15 says: "And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." - Joshua 24:15
That is not just words on a page. It is a heart posture. What you are doing in your home right now with your children matters. There will be generations that stem from the decisions you are making today.
What Is Dividing the Church Today?
Look around any room of believers and you will find different personalities, different giftings, different callings, and different testimonies. Those differences are not weaknesses. They are strengths. They are not meant to divide us. They are meant to strengthen us.
1 Corinthians 12:12-13 says: "For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, Jews or Greeks, slaves or free, and all were made to drink of one Spirit." - 1 Corinthians 12:12-13
And verses 25 and 26 continue: "That there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together." - 1 Corinthians 12:25-26
There are very small things that divide us into denominations, and we focus on those small things when we should be focused on the one thing that joins us all: Christ crucified.
How Does Comparison Hurt the Body of Christ?
The enemy uses comparison to make us focus on other people's gifts instead of developing our own. When you look at someone else's anointing and think you will never measure up, bitterness can take root.
Every gift you have been given is meant to further the kingdom. It is only doing any good if it is being used for that purpose. Find out what your gifts are and put them to work. The body needs you.
Point 3: Fix Your Eyes on Christ as His Bride
You are the bride of Christ. Jesus walked this earth, went to the cross, died, and rose again for you. And right now, He is preparing a wedding that you are invited to.
If we were truly functioning as the bride of Christ, here is what that would look like:
- We would love people where they are, seeking out the broken and hurting in our communities.
- We would be obedient to His word. Jesus said the evidence of loving Him is obeying Him.
- We would serve others and meet their needs. There would be no fatherless home without a spiritual Father to step in.
- We would worship in everything we do, not just in song but in generosity, in how we treat each other, and in how we speak.
- We would spread the gospel boldly, telling others what Jesus has done and what He can do for them.
- We would pursue Him above everything else.
The entire world is waiting for God's people to live this out loud. They are waiting to see something so uniquely different from the world around them. That difference is unity rooted in Christ.
Life Application
This week, take one intentional step toward unity in each area of your life. Surrender one area of your personal life to God that you have been holding onto. Do one specific act of service for your spouse or your children without being asked. And reach out to one person, whether inside or outside your church, and simply tell them you love them and what Jesus has done for you.
Unity does not happen by accident. It is a daily choice. And it starts with you.
Ask yourself these questions as you go into this week:
- Am I living a daily lifestyle of surrender, or am I still trying to do life on my own terms?
- Is my pursuit of Christ the foundation of my home, and am I actively serving my family the way Jesus served others?
- Am I using my gifts to build up the body of Christ, or am I sitting on the sidelines comparing myself to others?
- What would change in my relationships, my home, and my church if I truly believed I was the bride of Christ and acted like it?
